Overview:

This position works under the supervision of the Laboratory Billing Supervisor. The Laboratory Billing
Specialist oversees operations of insurance and patient collection functions, analyses data and maintains
integrity of multiple computer applications.

Outcome-Based Responsibilities (Deliverables):

Completes the daily operations of physician laboratory billing

• Proficient with data analysis and Excel functionality needed for trending and communicating exception management
• Perform responsibilities in NextGen EPM, Athena EPM, and Orchard LIS, including but not limited to file maintenance, and tasking in all three platforms
• Develop and research reports from various data sources for management of physician laboratory billing
• Monitor claims processing and accounts receivable to ensure timely and accurate handling. Respond to emails and tasks on a daily basis
• Work closely with all departments to obtain information to enable maximal filing, re-filing, and collection of all outstanding accounts
• Assist with problem solving and process improvement
• Utilize available resources effectively and seek direction when uncertain of procedures

Scope:

• Promotes quality relations and creates a supportive climate by serving as a role model. Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. Adheres to and enforces prescribed laboratory safety policies and regulations.
• Works independently with minimal direction. Functions as a liaison between the laboratory and the laboratory customer service agents in resolving insurance or patient account issues to completion.
• Operates general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computer keyboards and CRT. Effectively communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone, and computer methods.
• Utilizes proper telephone etiquette by being pleasant, attentive, taking accurate notes, and asking clarifying questions.
• Responds to requests promptly.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or general equivalency
• 3+ years experience in physician office or laboratory billing
• Experience with NextGen EMR Practice Management
• Experience with Athena EMR and/or Orchard LIS is helpful but not required
• Must attend annual compliance training and pass testing

Skills:

• Knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, and insurance processes
• Good understanding and experience of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding
• Moderate computer competency
• Experience creating, managing, and analyzing spreadsheets (Excel/Google Sheets)
• Ability and willingness to work flexible hours to meet staffing needs

Environmental Demands:

• After the initial training period, works primarily remotely but may occasionally be required to work in the office.
• May be required to operate fire and safety equipment or follow other safety procedures in an emergency situation.
• May be required to work with time constraints and in crisis situations.
