Lead Anatomic Pathology Technician

Location: North Richland Hills, TX

Overview of the Role:

  • Manages the AP Processing Team and oversees the receipt, accessioning, and processing of tissue and cytology specimens.
  • Works with the histology and cytology lead technologists to maintain appropriate supplies.
  • Coordinates duties with other AP Processing Techs, Cytotechnologists, and Pathologist as needed.
  • Work closely with the Laboratory Medical Director on all aspects of processing anatomic specimens.

Skills:

  • Ability to identify different specimen types.
  • Ability to determine appropriate processing of different tissue and biopsy types.
  • Ability to maintain organization of specimens and work area to avoid mislabeling and other errors
  • Ability to write accurate gross descriptions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with cytotechnologists, histotechnologists, and pathologists.

Primary Job Duties:

Monitors the daily operations of anatomic pathology processing:

  • AP order processing and accessioning, including both cytology and tissue specimens.
  • ThinPrep specimen aliquoting and labeling for molecular testing
  • ThinPrep cytology slide preparation and labeling for cytologic examination, including reprocessing as needed.
  • Tissue gross descriptions and tissue processing.
  • Routine cleaning and maintenance of automated cytology staining equipment and coverslipper.
  • Routine cleaning and maintenance of the automated histology staining equipment and tissue processor
  • Histology and cytology supply management
  • Monitors problem logs and other issues to ensure resolution of problem cases
  • Monitors maintenance logs and quality control logs
  • Manages AP Processing Team schedules and ensures adequate coverage, performing bench work as needed
  • Must have the capability of flexing schedule to accommodate workload
  • Complies with HIPAA and all local, federal, CLIA, safety and OSHA guidelines
  • Complies with all company and laboratory guidelines and policies

Utilizes technical skills and abilities to perform tissue processing and slide production:

  • Ability to competently perform all tests in moderate and high complexity testing.
  • Identifies and troubleshoots issues within grossing and processing, staining and coverslipping.
  • Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient results.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties and/or special projects as assigned.


Scope:

  • Promotes quality relations and cooperative environment. Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. Adheres to and enforces prescribed laboratory safety policies and regulations.
  • Works independently with minimal direction.
  • Operates general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computer keyboards and CRT, tissue processors, centrifuges, automated stainers, coverslippers, microscopes, manual pipettes.
  • Effectively communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone, and computer methods.
  • Works closely with the Laboratory Medical Director.

Education and Experience:

  • Qualify to perform high complexity testing under current CLIA-88 regulations.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory/medical technology science

HOURS: 3:00 - 11:00 PM, PAY RANGE: $24-27 hourly
